ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Law enforcement officers in New York state are employing new, state-of-the-art technology aimed at catching underage people who try to purchase alcohol.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the Department of Motor Vehicles has launched a pilot program with an app that can instantly determine if someone is using a fake ID.

The Democrat says New York is the first state to launch such a program. The app, developed by Long Island-based Intellicheck Inc., is only available to law enforcement.

The company's Law ID app lets police use smartphones to scan a license or ID and match it against driving records from all 50 states.

Officials say the app will let police know within seconds whether an ID is authentic.
